Owlboy

Explore a vibrantly crafted pixel world.

Owlboy is an open-world exploration game developed by D-Pad Studio, with a unique mix of platforming and flight. Owlboy was conceived by Simon Andersen in 2007 when he was pondering how he could make a game that could showcase the advantages of 2D over 3D. After much deliberation over the design of the game, he produced a small demo of the game together with Adrian Bauer, Jonathan Geer, and Blake Edwards. The team had been working together on an RPG project called Project Rhapsody until then, but Owlboy soon caught the group’s interest. Owlboy is a ‘hi-bit’ adventure, where you can fly and explore a brand new world in the clouds! Being a mute, Otus struggles living up to the expectations of owl-hood. Things spiral from bad to worse with the sudden appearance of sky pirates. Pick up your friends, and bring them with you as you explore the open skies. Overcome obstacles and greater enemies, in one of the most detailed adventures of this era. What follows is a journey through monster infested ruins, with unexpected encounters, well kept secrets, and burdens no one should have to bear.

Superb

Owlboy is a wonderful game that not only shows video games can be art, but also is incredibly fun. It's hard to capture the game in one genre but it's somewhere between a Metroidvania and an Action/Platformer. The developer D-Pad Studio took about a decade to make this game from conception to finish, and thankfully their efforts have made a masterpiece. In Owlboy you play as Otus, a mute young owl who ventures off in a heart-tugging emotional adventure about friendship and trust. You can play this game and enjoy the visuals, music, story and smooth controls. You can rush trough the game as a speed-runner, or attempt to collect every single collectible, achievement, secret and piece of lore hidden around. Wonderful gameplay, gorgeous art and music, a surprisingly emotional and fleshed-out story, and flawless technical performance. This is the stuff that Nintendo used to deliver back in their good days. One of the finest indie games lately.
